Low-cost and free 3DVEM software
3DVEM – Register GEO is a powerful low-cost software that solves the transformation, fusion, alignment, orientation or registration of 3D data between different coordinate systems, acquired by different metric devices, either range-based (laser scanner/LiDAR, RADAR, structured light, total station, distance meter, tape, GNSS…) or image-based (photogrammetry, computer vision, SfM…).
The software 3DVEM – Register GEO is made up of two modules, 3DVEM – Register and 3DVEM – GEO, in order to provide a unified solution that facilitates the resolution of all problems related to alignment, scaling, translation, unification and 3D positioning (i.e. 3D transformation or fusion) in multiple formats, either point clouds or 3D data measured with tape, level or plumb line. The software is designed to enable the integration of simple data (for instance, based either on the arbitrary alignment of two point features, or on a measured distance and an arbitrary origin) as well as sophisticated data (for instance, LiDAR datasets).
3DVEM – Register is a low cost software that solves the registration, also known as alignment or relative orientation, of point clouds, point clouds and 3D models, as well as 3D models, all of them scaled, from a sufficient number of matching (homologous) features identified in a variety of ASCII formats.
Matching features may be centres of targets and spheres, among others, as well as natural points or points extracted from digital models. Numbering/naming of features is initially random, since the software sets automatically features, and solves the indirect registration by means of either least squares or robust estimation, depending on the option selected by the user.
Next figure shows a top view of several LiDAR point clouds acquired by a terrestrial laser scanner coloured by station, before and after registration.
3DVEM – Register advantages:

Tutorial of the software 3DVEM – Register on YouTube. This tutorial imports .PTS files (from Leica Geosystems) with unnumbered targets, and performs the whole registration, explaining the different steps, included the generation of reports, error analysis, generation of 3D visualisations in 3D in VRML and DXF, as well as the export of the data.

The module 3DVEM – GEO allows the user to apply globally or interactively 3D transformations (translation, scale and rotation) to the data (point clouds and/or imported models), and in the case of files with control points, georeferenced the objects in a global reference system, either in Cartesian coordinates XYZ or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) cartographic coordinates (in different datum). Furthermore, this module allows the application of the absolute transformation to 3D objects obtained by photogrammetric/computer vision/SfM techniques in a simple and interactive way.
The GEOreferencing module contains functions related to the absolute transformation. Therefore, it can be used to carry out a Global transformation (to the whole project), a 3D transformation (selecting interactively features, vid. next figure), and a least squares Adjustment from control points (either in a local, global or UTM system).
